Oil leaking container ship might cause environmental catastrophe

Sunday, January 21, 2007

In the United Kingdom, an anti-pollution operation is under way after the stricken ship MSC Napoli started to leak dangerous heavy fuel oil.

The heavy fuel oil that is leaking from the beached Italian ship is extremely dangerous for the environment. Fear of pollution increased after the ship was further damaged during storms last Thursday. MSC Napoli was beached by Devon coastguards after it suffered heavy structual damage in the gale force storms of Thursday, 18 January 2007, that wreaked havoc across Northern Europe. The ship, which contains 160 containers of hazardous chemical substances, is listing at 35 degrees.

The entire 26-man crew was rescued by navy helicopters Thursday after severe gales. Cracks were found on both sides of the ship, but the current oil leak was not expected.

Around 2,400 containers were carried by the 62,000 tonne ship, some of which contain potentially dangerous hazardous chemicals.

The Coastguards have reported that up to 200 of the containers carrying materials such as perfume and battery acid are loose from the ship and they are looking for missing containers. South African stainless steel producer Columbus Stainless confirmed on Friday that there was at least 1,000 tonnes of nickel on board MSC Napoli.

A hole in the ship flooded the engine room and there’s now fears that the ship will break up. Saturday MSC Napoli was towed to Portland when a ”structural failure” forced the salvage team to beach it. As the storms have continued MSC Napoli has been further damaged.

The authorities have warned people about the pollution, which already has reached the beaches at Devon, but many want to see it on their own. Police have closed Branscombe Beach as more than 20 containers have broken up scattering their contents along the beach.

Sky News reported Sunday that the costs of the accident might be very high as thousands of pounds worth of BMW motorbikes, car parts, empty oak barrels and perfume might get lost in flooding containers.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Best Drones

When it comes to finding the Best Drones and the Best Drones for Kids, There are so many choices available it’s extremely difficult to pick out just one that can be considered the Best Drone.

It just makes sense to try and find the drone that is the best fit for what you need it to do.

The Best Drones for Kids are going to be the ones that can really take a beating and keep on flying. Durability is going to be a priority when shopping for drones for kids.

Building and flying remote controlled aircraft has always been a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby for people of all ages. Flying drones has become much more appealing as of late because of the advances that have been made in speed and durability and the quality of the HD Cameras that are now being installed on the remote controlled aircraft.

The best drones pretty much all come with high definition video cameras mounted on them these days. This allows the pilot to actually see where the drone is going just as if he were sitting in the cockpit at the controls.

Drones and quad copters are tons of fun and easy to fly. Your first flight can be a little bumpy, but by the time you have taken off and landed a few times you will get the hang of it and be doing flips and flying upside down in no time at all.

One of the biggest and best advantages of learning to fly drones is the fact that you don’t have to find a runway to take off from or land on. You can actually fly a drone inside your house. However, you still need to fly responsibly.

One should always keep the aircraft away from air ports and stay well away from regular aircraft, as a drone can cause serious havoc if it comes close to a regular plane .

When I first began building and flying remote controlled aircraft it was kind of difficult finding a place to fly. The only place available at the time was a grass runway that was owned and maintained by a modeling club.

I had to join the club and pay membership dues. I also had to join the AMA ( American Modelers Association) and have my transmitters inspected and certified for use at the club field.

With the development of drones and quad copters, none of that stuff is necessary anymore. To learn more about drones and find out which ones are the Best Drones and the Best Drones for Kids Please visit us at www.bestgadgets2017.com

People bid farewell to elderly Shinkansen super-express in Japan

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

The final farewell train in the first series of Shinkansen super-express, called zero-kei (0 Series), ran through western Japan Sunday afternoon from Shin-Osaka to Hakata. 0 Series has served in Japan since 1964, undergoing some model changes, and was retired from regular runs at the end of the last month. Extra farewell runs were scheduled for three days, with all seats allowed to be reserved, and this was the final run.

On Sunday in Shin-Osaka station, a farewell ceremony for Shinkansen 0 Series began at 14:30, where those who contributed to its debut were invited. Around 14:45, the train slowly appeared to enter Track 20. The head and tail cars changed roles, and the train got ready by 14:48 as HIKARI 347 bound for Hakata. And, at 14:56, blowing a long horn, the 0-Series train left for the final trip.

Japanese news media report that approximately 2,800 people gathered to see off the final departure, so did many in the stations the train stopped by. Lastly, the train arrived at Hakata as scheduled at 18:01, welcomed by about 1,600 fans.

Shinkansen network was launched on 1 October 1964, just before Tokyo Olympic Games, with a route connecting the capital Tokyo and Osaka City (now operated by JR-Central). The route for 0-Series trains was gradually extended to the west, which in 1975 reached Hakata area of Fukuoka City (now by JR-West).

Shinkansen 0 Series has a characteristic round face with a part like a shallow bowl, and was nicknamed “dango-bana” or “dangoppana” (literally, “dumpling nose”). At the time of its debut, 0 Series ran at a maximum speed of 210 km/h, which was the world’s highest. HIKARI, meaning beam or light, was the name of trains for the faster service. Even while more modern and faster series were rising, 0 Series continued to serve for some years, but in 1999 it ceased from JR-Central services, and in March 2000 from regular HIKARI runs of JR-West.

According to the media, remaining 0-Series Shinkansen cars are destined to be scrapped. Some other cars, which were withdrawn earlier, are preserved in museums including one in Osaka and National Railway Museum in the U.K.

U.S. military confirms Qur’ans were kicked, stepped on and splashed with urine at Guantanamo

Saturday, June 4, 2005

On Friday, the U.S. military released the results of their investigation and confirmed that in 5 separate incidents, American guards at the Guantánamo Bay prison “mishandled” the Islamic holy book. However, they stress that guards were usually “respectful” of the Qur’an.

One incident involved splashing a Qur’an with urine by urinating near an air vent while others involved kicking, stepping on and writing in Qur’ans.

Brigadier-General Jay Hood, the commander of the jail, said that these incidents are the exception to the rule. In a statement issued late Friday, he said: “The inquiry … revealed a consistent, documented policy of respectful handling of the Qur’an dating back almost two-and-a-half years.”

Gen. Hood looked into the allegations, published and then retracted by Newsweek, that American personnel flushed a Qur’an down a toilet. He said that the inquiry did not find any evidence supporting this particular allegation. “The inquiry found no credible evidence that a member of the Joint Task Force at Guantanamo Bay ever flushed a Qur’an down a toilet. This matter is considered closed.”

The incidents reported are:

  • a guard kicking a prisoner’s Qur’an;
  • Qur’ans wetted by water balloons thrown by guards;
  • a “two-word obscenity” written, in English, inside the cover of a Qur’an. Military officials state that it is equally possible that a guard wrote this in the prisoner’s Qur’an or that the prisoner wrote this in his own Qur’an;
  • a guard who urinated too close to an air vent, spraying a Qur’an with urine;
  • an interrogator who stepped on a Qur’an during an interrogation.

The investigation also revealed 15 alleged cases of Qur’an mistreatment by detainees themselves. Detainees used Qur’ans as pillows, urinated on them, and, several times, tore pages out of copies of the books, according to the report. For example, the report states that a guard observed a “detainee place two Qur’ans in his toilet and state he no longer cared about the Qur’an or his religion,” on February 23, 2004. It is believed that such behavior is intended to cause disruption and problems for the guards.

Benefits Of Using Fireplace Inserts

byadmin

Using a fireplace can help cut heating costs in the winter, and it’s nice to be able to sit in front of the fireplace and enjoy the warmth and the view of the flames. However, a regular fireplace isn’t that energy efficient and can take a lot of work to maintain. It’s sometimes a better option to purchase Fireplace Inserts for a home’s fireplaces from a company such as Thefireplaceguys.com.

Less Expensive Than a New Fireplace

Old fireplaces are only about 5 to 10 percent efficient and can be dangerous if not properly maintained. In some cases, the only safe way to use a fireplace is to replace it or get an insert. Inserts are much more affordable than totally redoing the fireplace and chimney.

Choose Fuel Type

Depending on the type of insert a person chooses, they can use wood, pellets, propane, coal, or natural gas as fuel. Gas will quickly heat up any room, but wood or pellets are more environmentally-friendly options. Wood burning inserts can be used even if the power goes out, which isn’t the case with other types of inserts, but then a person needs to deal with hauling wood. Gas and propane inserts have the least maintenance, as they don’t need to regularly be cleaned or have the ashes removed. For the least emissions, choose an EPA-certified wood burning insert, which has almost zero emissions.

More Efficient

Putting Fireplace Inserts into the fireplaces of a home can increase their efficiency by over 40 percent, depending on the type of insert chosen. They get rid of down drafts that can cause cold air to enter a home and add insulation to the home, so they help decrease heating and cooling costs even when they’re not in use. Because of the improved design of an insert over a fireplace, they also allow a room to be heated up to three times longer with the same amount of fuel.

Many Styles to Choose From

There are a number of different styles of inserts, making it so a person can choose the one that best suits the style of the room where it will be placed. This means the fireplace will be an attractive part of the home and enhance the look of the room instead of detracting from it.

World’s cheapest car launched in India, will go on sale in April

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

The world’s least expensive car, the Tata Nano, has been launched in India. It will go on sale in April, and will start delivery in July. The automobile costs only 100,000 Indian rupees, or just under US$2,000.

“We are at the gates offering a new form of transportation to the people of India, and later I hope other markets as well,” said the chairman of the auto firm, Ratan Tata, calling the vehicle a “milestone.”

“From the drawing board to its commercial launch, the car has overcome several challenges,” Tata said. “I hope it will provide safe, affordable four-wheel transportation to families who till now have not been able to own a car.

“This was never conceived as the cheapest car, but as providing transport to those people who never owned a car,” Tata said. “Driven mainly by the change in demand that we see elsewhere in the world, we suddenly felt we had a product that could be of considerable interest as a low-cost product in western Europe, eastern Europe, the UK and even the U.S.”

The Tata Nano is a four-door vehicle, and is 3 metres long, 1.5 m wide, and 1.5 m tall. It is equipped with a 33 bhp, 624 cc engine at the rear. No radio, airbags, power steering, or air conditioning are available in the basic model, although upgrades are available. The Nano Europa, a slightly larger European version of the car, is expected in 2011.

According to Ravi Kant, the managing director at Tata Motors, the first 100,000 people to receive a Nano would be chosen from the initial orders by a ballot.

An auto analyst for Bombay’s Angel Broking, Vaishali Jajoo, predicted that the Nano will add only three percent to Tata’s revenues even if it can sell a quarter of a million such cars per annum.

“That doesn’t make a significant difference to the top line,” Jajoo said. “And for the bottom line, it will take five to six years to break even.”

Environmentalists say that the car will exacerbate traffic problems already rife in India, and help increase pollution levels. Tata, however, stated that its vehicle is the least polluting car in the country.

Tips For Choosing Electronic Toys For Kids

Technology has taken over everything by storm. The toy industry has also adapted to it to manufacture educational electronic toys and gadgets. The new age kids get the best of both traditional and high-tech toys. While the simplistic games provide them with a hands-on experience, tech-based toys prepare them for the new world.

It can become an overwhelming experience to choose from the broad selection of variants available. How to know if it is suitable for your kid? Does it provide any value? Is it all just a show? These are some of the common questions you may contemplate on. But it is not that hard if you know what to look for. Consider these aspects while buying electronics for kids:

Age-appropriate: The first question to ask is if your child is old enough to comprehend the toy. Most of these playthings come with age group stickers that tell you about this. But every child grows differently, and you should consider your child’s understanding before buying such toys. For instance, it would hardly make any difference in what you give to toddlers. They would bat and stomp anything you give them.

The added value: These toys should contribute towards something extra that other toys cannot provide. The inclusion of exciting and innovative elements is what makes them stand out. Look for such aspects while buying them because they are pricy and ascertaining the worth is a must. These are meant to provide educational value, so make sure to check the functioning. If you want it to be a little more entertaining, then musical toys for kids is the apt option.

Durability: Kids are notorious, and their idea of playing involves stomping, throwing and clunking their toys. Most electronics are vulnerable to such actions. The battery enabled gadgets hardly last with such rough handling. Hence, it is essential to check the quality and build before buying to get the best for the price you pay. Go for branded and reputed companies while buying such high-end toys for maximum durability.

Safety: This is a primary concern that becomes profound when it comes to electronic toys. However, all the major toy stores adhere to the standards and have the certification and safety factors listed on the packaging. Make sure to check them along with the making of the toy. Does it have wires and detachable batteries? Does it run the risk of choking hazard? Ask these questions while examining the models.

Entertainment: The electronic aspect of these toys gravitates towards being educational. This is the main reason many parents buy them despite the expense. But it is essential to remember that these are toys at the end of the day. Kids do not understand your vision and only look for fun. So, it is essential to ensure that these toys are enjoyable and do not feel like homework for them.

Home of controversial book publisher set ablaze

Four people have been arrested on terrorism charges in Islington, London, England, after a suspected petrol bombing on the house of Martin Rynja, owner of book publishing company Gibson Square.

His company recently sparked controversy after buying the rights to publish The Jewel of Medina, a work of fiction by Sherry Jones depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad and his child bride, Aisha.

The bombing, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to the evacuation of the £2.5 million property in Lonsdale Square. Three men, aged 22, 30 and 40, were arrested at 2:25am BST by armed officers, two in Lonsdale Square, and one after being stopped near Angel tube station.

Police comments suggested that the trio had been under surveillance, and that they had advance knowledge of the plot and simply waited for the arsonists to strike, before arresting them.

On Saturday, a woman was arrested for obstructing police during their searches of four addresses – two in Walthamstow, and two in Ilford and Forest Gate.

Speaking earlier this month, Mr Rynja said that “The Jewel of Medina has become an important barometer of our time. As an independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid of the consequences of debate.” Ms Jones commented that she did not intend for her novel to be offensive to Islam. She noted that she “[has] deliberately and consciously written respectfully about Islam and Muhammad.” She “envisaged that [her] book would be a bridge builder” between Islam and the western world.
