China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Ontario college teachers begin strike

Tuesday, March 7, 2006

All across the Canadian province of Ontario, college teachers have gone on strike, leaving more than 150,000 students in 24 colleges without classes.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union rejected the final offer from college management, after negotiations at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in downtown Toronto.

This strike comes just a month before many student’s scheduled graduations. If courses are extended into the summer, to compensate for lost school time, students’ ability to maintain jobs to pay for their education would be severely limited.

“A prolonged strike would not only affect college students, but also have a ripple affect on the Ontario economy and workforce. Potential employers are expecting 44,000 new graduates and 100,000 returning students to enter the workforce this May, families have made summer plans, and some seasonal businesses may experience a significant loss if the school year does not finish on time,” says Tyler Charlebois, Director of Advocacy for the College Student Alliance. “I hope for the sake of Ontario, the provincial government takes this situation as seriously as we are and takes action as necessary.”

OPSEU was asking for more teachers, smaller classes, and more faculty time for students. A strike vote was 80.4% in favour of action. Humber had the least support for the strike, with only 67.0%, followed by St. Lawrence with 67.7%. St. Clair, Boréal, Centennial, and Sault all had more than 90% support.

US: Melamine from contaminated pet food enters human food chain

Sunday, April 29, 2007

At least 45 people are reported to have eaten pork which came from a hog farm in Ceres, California in the United States, where pigs from the farm were fed pet food which was recalled because it was contaminated with the chemical melamine.

So far none of the individuals have experienced signs of illnesses, but it is not known what effect the chemical, when ingested, has on humans because no major study has taken place on melamine.

On April 21, at least seven urine samples taken from pigs at hog farm, were tested and the results came back positive for the chemical melamine. At least three samples from the feed used to feed the pigs were tested and those results also came back positive for melamine.

Yesterday, the United States Food and Drug Administration or FDA, said in a statement that “we have no evidence of harm to humans associated with the processed pork product” and that “no recall of meat products processed from these animals is being issued.”

Despite the consumption of pork by humans, the FDA states that the risk to human health is minimal.

“The assessment that, if there were to be harm to human health, it would be very low, is based on a number of factors, including the dilution of the contaminating melamine and melamine-related compounds from the original rice protein concentrate as it moves through the food system. First it is a partial ingredient in the pet food; second, it is only part of the total feed given to the hogs; third, it is not known to accumulate in the hogs and the hogs excrete melamine in their urine; fourth, even if present in pork, pork is only a small part of the average American diet. Neither FDA nor USDA has uncovered any evidence of harm to the swine from the contaminated feed,” added the statement.

On March 19, the manufacturer of the food, Menu Foods, which is based in Mississauga, Ontario in Canada, recalled all of its dog and cat food which totaled over 60 million items. On April 28, Canadian officials announced that they will hold products, such as wheat and corn gluten, as well as soy and rice proteins that have been imported from China until they can be tested for melamine.

It is not known how extensive the outbreak is.

Great Technical Writing: Improve Your Readers’ Access With A Visual Index

OVERVIEW

People are visual creatures. They look at your product, and see, for example, a button or display. They want to find out about that control or indicator. A Visual Index is a simple but powerful document access tool that enables your Readers to find the information that they want.

This article describes the Visual Index concept and tells how to create one for your document.

A VISUAL INDEX

A Visual Index is a picture of your product or process with links to the relevant information in the related document. Using a Visual Index, your Readers can look at the picture, and quickly jump to the place in your document that describes the item of interest.

Your document may include several Visual Indexes (the plural of “index’ is “indexes” not “indices”).

STARTS WITH A PICTURE

The Visual Index starts with a picture of your product or process. There are various kinds of pictures to use, based on the product type:

* Physical Product (for example, a barbecue or video disk recorder)

Pictures of the product (all relevant views).

* A Procedure or Process: A flowchart of the steps and decisions in the procedure or process.

* Software Product 1: Screenshots of the software.

* Software Product 2: Before and after images of the work that the product does.

* Organization: An organization chart.

LABEL THE PICTURE

Label all the User-Product Interaction Points (U-PIP) on the picture. A U-PIP is anywhere that your User and the product may interact. U-PIP’s include controls, displays, and relevant physical features of the product (such as handles, latches, etc.). Provide a meaningful (to your Reader) label (name) for the U-PIP. (Use that same exact label everywhere you refer to that U-PIP.)

Aside: If your product uses sounds to inform the User, then include a table of those sounds, what they mean, and a link into the relevant area of your document (describing the sound).

LINK THE U-PIP’s TO YOUR DOCUMENT

Up to this point, the Visual Index is just like any well-labeled picture of your product or process. However, when you add links into your document, the well-labeled picture becomes a Visual Index.

The link should be to a section of your document that you believe your reader would most want to reach to get the information about that U-PIP. (This is a fundamental question whenever you create an index: “does my reader want to come to this place in my document for this item?”)

Your method of adding links to the picture depends upon the publishing mechanism for the document. If the document is published as:

* A Printed document, then use page numbers for the links;

* An Electronic Document, then use hyperlinks that a Reader can click on to follow. If the document is published as HTML, then the visual index can be an image map.

EXAMPLE 1: A PAIN IN MY FOOT

I have a pain in my foot when I walk. If I go to a website about feet, it would be very efficient for finding out about my pain, if I could see a picture of a foot with various areas where the pain could be. Links from the foot areas to specific web pages would enable me to find the information about my specific foot pain quickly.

EXAMPLE 2: PHOTO CORRECTING SOFTWARE

Show a picture with the errors that your software can handle, before and after correction. Here the U-PIP’s are each of the photo errors.

EXAMPLE 3: A COURSE ON WRITING USER DOCUMENTATION

The Visual Index is a flowchart for creating the User Document. Since the Course is presented in HTML, the Visual Index is made from an image map, with hyperlinks into the sections of the Course relevant to each item in the flowchart.

BOTTOM LINE

A Visual Index is a simple concept. But like many simple concepts it is very powerful. Try to include one in your next document. You’ll be doing your Reader a great service.

2007 Baseball World Cup Day 1: Taichung starts prior to Taipei

Thursday, November 8, 2007

The opening ceremonies for the 2007 Baseball World Cup (2007 BWC) were held Tuesday. Torrential rain, however, made Panama vs Spain the opening match of the 2007 BWC in Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium. The original opening match of Chinese Taipei vs Italy was postponed until next week and will be played at Tianmu Baseball Stadium.

“Recently, we got into a sticky situation while constructing a dome due to some protests by non-governmental people, but we’ll try to overcome these difficulties in order to present high-level sports to the international market.” Chin-chi Wu, the Director of the Taipei City Bureau of Education, remarked at Tuesday’s opening ceremony.

Boyfriend Wants Space? Stop Your ‘Break’ From Becoming A Breakup}

Submitted by: Anthony Malibu

Every relationship has ups and downs, but what does it mean when your boyfriend wants space? Is he looking to break up with you, or will some time apart actually help your relationship? Find out what you can do to prevent your break from becoming a breakup.

“I think I need some space…”

Finding out your boyfriend wants some time alone is never an easy thing. Maybe you sensed it… or maybe it came as a complete surprise to you. Either way, the above phrase can easily send you straight into panic mode, if you don’t know how to handle it correctly.

So what is your boyfriend really asking for? Is he breaking up with you, or is he coming back? How much space is enough, and when should you expect to get back together? These questions are all good ones, but they won’t be easily answered. Yet pressing for those answers, especially right now, is a really bad move.

He Wants To Spend Time Apart – Your First Moves

When your boyfriend announces his intention to ‘take time off’ from your relationship, the worst thing you can do is crowd or chase him. Hounding him for answers and deadlines is going to send him running in the opposite direction. Fighting against the break is even worse: he’s already made up his mind, and the more you chase him the faster he’ll run. In the end, the best course of action right now is no action at all.

Okay, chasing your boyfriend is out. So what

should

you do? What actions can you take to keep the relationship from falling apart completely?

Well for one, you need to clearly define the rules of your break. More importantly, don’t let your boyfriend be the one to dictate these rules either. If he wants space, it’s always best to give him more space than he needs. This means not calling him, texting him, or emailing your ex boyfriend during your little ‘break’. Leave him utterly and completely alone, and ignore any contact on his part. By removing yourself from his life so abruptly, something very important happens:

your boyfriend starts to miss you

.

Your Boyfriend Wants a Break? Give Him One

Don’t let your now ex boyfriend decide exactly what the break ‘means’. Do that, and he’ll show up a few evenings from now to spend a few hours with you… all because he’s lonely. The next morning he’ll disappear again, maybe for days at a time, and you’ll feel sad and used by him. And if you call him at this point? Suddenly you’re the bad guy. He’ll repremand you for not giving him his space.

Let me let you in on a little secret: your boyfriend doesn’t want space. What he wants here is a one-sided breakup. This means he gets to see and talk to you whenever he wants, but you don’t have the same luxury with him. When you call or text him, your boyfriend will act all weirded out as if you’re crowding or pressuring him. But for some reason, he’ll think it’s perfectly okay to call or talk to you.

That’s because your boyfriend

expects

you to wait around for him. Because he’s the one who initiated the break, he knows you don’t really want it. He’s comfortable in the knowledge that you’re not going anywhere, and that he can get you to come back whenever he wants. This will keep you apart for much longer, because he really has no incentive to reverse the breakup.

Making Your Boyfriend Want You Back

If you’re constantly accommodating your boyfriend and letting him make all the rules, your break will go on indefinitely. Think about it: he gets all the benefits of having a girlfriend, but without any of the drawbacks of commitment. He can go out, do what he wants, and even see other people – all under the guise of being on “a break” with you.

To get your ex to want you back, you need to make him realize he stands to lose you. You can do this by pulling away and doing your own thing. Instead of sitting around feeling miserable and sorry for yourself, go out and have some fun. Call some friends, hit some of your favorite hangouts, and make sure you’re having a great time. Feel confident and secure in the knowledge that doing these things will make your boyfriend jealous. He wants the freedom to have his own fun, but he’d much rather have the security of knowing you’re at home, alone, not having any fun at all.

The less you rely on your boyfriend for happiness and entertainment, the more he’ll worry about losing you. Your man will wonder where you are and who you’re out with, and most of all, whether or not you’re meeting up with other guys. When he sees the smile on your face, he’ll start wondering if you’re finally over him – or if you still care about your relationship at all. This is what will make him want you again.

Don’t approach your breakup without a plan, thinking you can just wing it. The success or failure of getting your boyfriend back depends upon what you do right now, not later.

Light aircraft makes emergency landing in major industrial estate

Tuesday, July 18, 2006

BBC Wales and iPTV station VTV are reporting that a light aircraft made an emergency landing at 13:00 BST at Treforest Industrial Estate near Cardiff.

The aircraft, an orange-coloured single-engine model Fox home-built kit was carrying two people when it made a forced landing on a section of dual carriageway within the industrial estate.

It is not known how severely the man and woman on board were injured, a spokesperson for South Wales Police stated that both of the aircraft’s occupants sustained “non life-threatening injuries”.

Treforest Industrial Estate is one of the largest business parks in the south Wales valleys. Its location, just two hundred metres from the main A470 expressway could have resulted in a far greater tragedy.

VTV reporter and private pilot Craig Handley said that the location of the accident “would have been the most logical place to try and set the aircraft down as the dual carriageway, which runs through the estate, is clearly visible from the air and is almost completely straight and wide.”

Today’s accident comes less than a year after a similar-sized aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing less than two miles away from Treforest Industrial Estate. A Cessna 150 suffered a sudden loss of engine power during its approach to nearby Cardiff International Airport.

The Cessna in the earlier accident collided with a group of trees shedding its wings before coming to rest on a small country road. The two occupants of that aircraft received slight injuries.

South Wales Police have not confirmed whether any motorists or pedestrians were injured when the aircraft in today’s accident made its emergency landing. The aircraft did cause some structural damage to a factory unit on the industrial estate prior to coming to rest, inverted, on the adjacent dual carriageway.

According to one eyewitness, the aircraft appeared to have experienced an engine-related problem seconds before impact.

A spokesperson, for Cardiff International Airport said that the aircraft had departed from Cardiff at 12:43 BST and that the airport’s Air Traffic Control centre had lost contact with the plane.

The Civil Aviation Authority’s Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) have been informed and are due to begin their investigation into the crash.

Buffalo, N.Y. restaurant to end nearly 30-year tradition

Monday, August 21, 2006

Buffalo, New York —

After nearly thirty years, Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo, New York will end a tradition of being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week by ending its overnight food service.

The tradition for Buffalonians, who are able to enjoy drinks at the bars and clubs until 4:00 a.m. will end sometime at the end of August or September, according to overnight manager Wendi Dittmar and restaurant accountant Roseanne Jones.

“We will be starting the closure of the overnight shift sometime in the next 2 weeks to a month,” said Dittmar in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

Jones told Wikinews that owner Pano Georgiadis is “just fed up” with the “destruction, the walk-outs of bills and fights that the ‘drunk’ people cause” in his restaurant.

Pano’s opened in 1977 on the day of the blizzard of ’77’ and has “remained open for 24 hours since then”, only closing for an hour at a time on the weekends to clean up and prepare the restaurant for breakfast, said Georgiadis.

Artvoice, which holds the “Best of Buffalo” competition every year where readers vote for their favorite Buffalo place, has listed Pano’s as the Best of Buffalo for best brunch, best Greek restaurant, best patio and best super-cheap breakfasts for 2006.

Dittmar also says that Georgiadis is expected to make several “public service announcements” within the next few weeks to “thank customers for their patronage.”
