Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Tinnitus Causes What Causes The Ringing In My Ear?

Tinnitus Causes

Tinnitus Causes, below are a list of the most common causes of tinnitus, the causes may be lasting but they will not distress and are not oppressive.

Inner Ear Damage

The inner ear can degrade slightly which can be one reason for a cause of tinnitus, the end product can be corruption inside the ear. Fundamentally the process by which sound travels through the ear is from the outer to the inner ear, it is the inner ear that is the vital cog in this process. Here you have the auditory nerve and the cochlea.

The cochlea is best described as a coiled, spiral tube and alongside this are thousands of tiny responsive hair cells. The auditory nerve has an important role to play as it delivers all the sounds that it captures and pings them to the brain. Logically if any minute section of the cochlea is corrupted then the signals that are sent to the brain become distorted and some sections of the brain receive no signals at all.

The cochlea is now working harder to send those signals to the brain and the damaged area of the cochlea is doing virtually nothing so the working areas that are receptive and working have to compensate for the areas that are corrupted.

The working components of the cochlea are then identified by the brain and the normal processes resume but with the sounds of tinnitus (buzzing, ringing, whizzing) in your ear. The signals are then sent by the cochlea as would normally happen to the brain and the noises picked up are due to the sound overload because not all of the cochlea is functioning as it should.

A common problem with older people is tinnitus as hearing loss is a natural process when we get older. Tinnitus will occur and hearing will lessen as the sensitivity of the hearing nerves gradually reduces. Young people also experience tinnitus and the primary tinnitus cause here is the exposure of the hearing to excessive loud noises, for example pop concerts.

A first visit to an ear specialist may not uncover the reason(s) for tinnitus and because of this it can be a very tough and stressful time of your life as you look for answers. Tinnitus causes can sometimes remain un-diagnosed, so we explore our own solutions to help explain the ailment. So what other factors can cause this annoying and embarrassing ailment, here I have listed natural causes for tinnitus:

Earwax can block the ear over time

An infection/inflammation of the middle ear

Glue ear otosclerosis – irregular bone development can be another factor and is often a genetic problem that is passed down from one generation to the next. The bone irregularity is often found in the middle ear and can lead to reduced hearing

Meniere’s disease – sufferers experience difficulties in their balance, this problem can be found in the inner ear or as it’s commonly known the labyrinth

Paget’s disease – if any damage has been caused to the bones in the ear then repair and enhancement are delayed this then lessens the repair cycle

Anaemia-tinnitus, the tinnitus sounds heard can be as a result of less red blood cells and thinner blood. The blood then circulates the ear at a faster pace and the sounds heard are these blood cells speeding past the cochlea and the brain picking the sound up

A perforated eardrum

Other Common Causes of Tinnitus

A bang to the head or injury to the same

Loud gunshot or explosions near to the ear often accountable to tinnitus

Acoustic neuroma – this is illustrated as a rare, non-cancerous degradation that invades the nerve of the inner ear

Adverse reactions to established medications, eg. Antibiotics, diuretics, quinine and aspirin. This is normal if you exceed the correct dosage

Surpassing the advised limits of alcohol and drug mis-use

An out of control thyroid gland or narrowing of the arteries due to high blood pressure can be another factor

Stress is often referred to as a cause of tinnitus but this is incorrect as this only makes he condition worse if not treated and is often the underlying cause for tinnitus. There are methods outlined in a previous article in reducing stress levels, the sudden loss of a loved one is the best example for the on set of tinnitus as this can be a very stressful episode in any ones life.

Cadillac unveils Obama’s ‘Beast’, the 2009 Presidential State Car

Saturday, January 17, 2009

The US Secret Service has released the first photos Wednesday of the new presidential limousine that will transport Barack Obama down Pennsylvania Avenue next Tuesday as part of the 56th Presidential inaugural parade after he is sworn in at the Capitol. The First Limo – the 2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine – will replace President Bush’s Cadillac DTS Presidential Limousine that rolled out in 2004.

Nicknamed “The Beast”, the hulking machine is a new model year 2009, modified limousine. According to General Motors, the new “2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine” is the first not to carry a specific model name. The Obama Mobile was introduced on January 14 with noticeably different styling borrowed from the Cadillac Escalade and STS, while the suspension is most likely related to the Chevrolet Kodiak medium-duty truck.

Do you like the car? What would you like to see Obama driven around in?

Mr. David Caldwell of General Motors has revealed that the sleek black car would include a hand-crafted interior and “state of the art electronics.” The car’s high-tech security features include five-inch-thick (12.7-centimeter-thick) bombproof glass, tough-as-nails tires, and a sealed interior that’s invulnerable to chemical attack. The armoured limousine has been heavily modified to withstand potential attacks by weapons or bombs. The San Francisco Chronicle puts it in a proper perspective noting, “a half-inch of transparent armor is enough to stop a .44 Magnum round at point-blank range; at a thickness of 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches, the same material can withstand higher-velocity bullets fired from military assault rifles.”

According to spy photographer, Brenda Priddy, and General Motors, the limousine, which has the intricate, dual-textured grille, is also equipped with standard Goodyear Regional RHS truck tires in a 285/70R19.5 size, on 19.5-inch wheels. The rims have a run-flat device (manufactured by Hutchinson Industries). Xenon headlights from the Escalade are installed in the front, while the rear has some STS part. The doors are at least 20 centimeters (8 inches) thick. It carries the US flag on the front fenders and an embroidered Seal of the President of the United States is affixed to several panels in the back.

According to the US Secret Service, the vehicle would be a “valuable asset” in providing the President with the highest level of protection. “Although many of the vehicle’s security enhancements cannot be discussed, it is safe to say that this car’s security and coded communications systems make it the most technologically advanced protection vehicle in the world,” Nicholas Trotta, Assistant Director for the Office of Protective Operations said in a statement. The new limousine is the responsibility of White House Transportation Agency.

One of the specifications is that we don’t talk about the specifications.

The Presidential State Car is the official state car used by the President of the United States. It is informally known as “Cadillac One”. The current Presidential State Car is a 2005 hand-crafted, armored, and stretched DTS (DeVille Touring Sedan) built on a GM four-wheel drive platform. It was first used on the second inauguration parade of George W. Bush in 2005. But the version to be used by President Obama uses a GMC Topkick chassis, while maintaining the Cadillac exterior.

The President of the United States travels in one of two armoured Cadillac limousines based upon the normal sedan, the Cadillac DTS, with heavy customisation. Lincoln cars have also been used in the past, most notably by President John F Kennedy. The current limousines were custom-built by O’Gara, Hess and Eisenhart, founded in Fairfield, Ohio in 1942. It specializes in armouring limousines for presidents and heads of state.

President William McKinley was the first US president to ride in an automobile. However, it was President Theodore Roosevelt who rode on the first government-owned car, a white Stanley Steamer. Roosevelt’s successor, William Howard Taft, was the first president to use a presidential state car that was permanently stored in the White House garage.

Meanwhile, Obama’s 2005 Chrysler 300C Hemi was auctioned on eBay with a starting bid of $100,000 and a buy-it-now price of $1,000,000. It has less than 21,000 miles on it and is in like-new condition. He leased the car in 2004 and traded it for a Ford Escape Hybrid in 2007. The car was sold to Tim O’Boyle.

Article Marketing For Real Estate Professionals

Submitted by: Barbra I. Miller

More and more real estate professionals have been turning to the internet for business purposes. In fact, one of the earliest attempts at commercializing the internet involved local real estate listings. Online real estate has come a long way, and so have real estate professionals on the web as well. But one aspect of the internet many newcomers miss out on, despite being seasons pros offline, involves successful article marketing.

For an increasing number of real estate people, it’s become an ever more important tool, generating leads beyond their wildest dreams. But what is article marketing? Well, you’re reading a great example of one right now! Simply put, article marketing is about sharing information – specifically, your expertise. Now before you decide giving away your hard-won knowledge is too ridiculous to bother further contemplating, please be a little patient and read on some more. For it could very well be just what you need to take your business to the next level of success, both online and off!

When you do article marketing, you are engaging in the act of publishing articles for strategic marketing purposes online. Think of that piece of tax advice that makes the rounds this time every year in the media, or those home-cooking recipes doled out every Thanksgiving by some celebrity chef or other: That’s the gist of article marketing right there, where industry professionals provide free advice in order to promote themselves. This information is considered free because it costs the newspaper or radio station nothing to produce, yet it benefits their readers or listeners. For the celebrity chef, tax adviser, or real estate professional, sharing useful information with such wide audiences puts them in a good mood, and this positive frame of mind becomes associated with the chef or tax adviser or real estate professional.

This is very important, and is the whole point of article marketing, so let me repeat that: free helpful information works to associate the positive feelings engendered by that helpful information with the person or company providing the advice.

Sharing all my articles on real estate on the internet has helped me reach an audience many times more than even paid advertising can, and it has let me do it for almost no money at all, besides the time it took to write, when you consider that time is money and so forth. But the benefits are so enormous, so you too should add such this tool to your existing real estate marketing efforts.

Article marketing won’t simply work on its own, of course. There is a lot more to it than this brief introductory overview can show. For one thing, it takes real dedication, the kind a real writer has, regularly writing unique content. Articles must come fairly frequently, too; no less than a new one each week to be viable, and most likely – in today’s competitive environment – a whole lot more than that. That’s why many hire professionals to do article marketing these days, especially small businesses which want to grow but do not have the manpower on hand to staff an entire online promotions department of their own.

Canadian National Exhibition takes place in Toronto

Sunday, September 2, 2007

From August 17 to September 3, 2007 the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE or The EX) came back to Toronto for its 128th year. It is the largest in Canada and the fifth largest in North America.

The three day Canadian International Airshow, the horse show called “Tom Bishop’s Trick Riding Show”, and many other events were the main attractions at this year’s CNE. An estimated 1.3 million people attend the CNE every year.

The 680 News tower made entirely from Lego’s was on display, with a fence around it.

On Saturday at 1:00 p.m. was the airshow, which featured award winning aviators, including the Canadian Forces (CF) snowbirds, flying planes used in Afghanistan. The United States Air Force (USAF) also flew planes used in the military and a new F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft for its first time in an international show. A CF-18 Hornet, Canadian version of the USAF F/A-18 Hornet, 1943 Boeing Stock Stearman PT-17, and many other rare planes were also flown. Everyone could see the airshow but for a good photo and video opportunity freelance Wikinews journalist and others paid CA$5.00 to get on top of Ontario Place, across from the exhibition grounds. There was a ton of stairs to get to the top, but it was well worth it if one wanted excellent photos and video to watch with their family.

“I used to come to the air show every year with my dad … being out there flying over Lake Ontario in my hometown is unbelievable,” said Capt. Yanick “Crank” Gregoire of the CF-18 Hornet, on its 25th anniversary.

General Rick Hillier, Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Forces, made a brief speech and talked about Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. Followed by was a pre-recorded speech made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Then the American and Canadian national anthems were played and the show begun, it even included a live pilot in a Canadian Forces plane talking through his microphone into the speakers on top of Ontario Place. The airshow was something not to be missed as the staggering planes are always best watched live.

In the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place were many vendors and people selling books, cloths, inventions, and even some live cooking shows. There was also a arts, crafts, and hobbies building, which was one of the best places to visit at this year’s CNE. Rides and attractions filled the grounds across Ontario Place.

The famous Iams-sponsored Superdogs performed dog tricks for an audience in a large area, while behind the curtains were salespeople at booths advertising and selling Iams dog food. They perform at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and other fairs in Canada.

At 5:00pm was the horse show at the Riding Academy “Horse Palace“, hosted by Tom Bishop Sr. There was a woman representing Ontario, a 15-year-old girl from Alberta representing Canada, and a man from the United States on a black horse. One of the horse riders, a champion, was from Canada but moved to the U.S. and has toured both countries. Tom Bishop Jr. stood and rode on top of two “Canadians”, the most rare and oldest horse breed in North America. The horses had to jump over a line of gas-led fire, Tom Bishop Sr. noted beforehand that horses are scared of fire.

At 9:00 p.m. was the Human Cannon Ball, from the U.S. Performed by David “The Bullet” Smith, Jr., son of Cannonball Smith, is the second person in the world that can do the “don’t-do-this-at-home-or-else!” stunt. It is their third year at the CNE. Most people came 20 minutes before to get a good spot. The shot was so loud that some had to plug their ears, and if one didn’t their heart would be beating hard. Smith jumped out like he’s done that stunt a thousand times, he did a push up on the ground and quickly ran back.

While walking to the Ontario Place parking lot, as soon as the “Human Cannon Ball” was finished, the Canadian Forces had several of their vehicles used in Afghanistan on display outside. A snowbirds plane, some LAV III’s, tanks, a helicopter, and a boat were on display. Soldiers were outside to greet and talk to the visitors, and had photos taken. A large banner was hung and old music was playing. People even signed a board beside a tank showing their support and thanks to the soldiers currently deployed. There was also a large tent with real Canadian soldiers giving away bracelets and showing actual uniforms used. They were very heavy and one soldier actually said the cloths are comfortable. It wasn’t clear which base the soldiers came from but one said that he came from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The CNE closes every night at 11:00pm.

It ends on Labour Day at 7:00pm.

Dubai World to receive $9.5 billion in government aid

Thursday, March 25, 2010

The government of Dubai announced that it intends to provide $9.5 billion to Dubai World to allow the government-owned investment company to restructure its debt.

The announcement comes as part of Dubai World’s plan to restructure more than $23 billion of debt, including converting nearly $9 billion of debt into equity, after its collapse last fall. The package includes $8 billion of funding to Nakheel, Dubai World’s real estate subsidiary, as well as $1.5 billion to Dubai World as a whole. The restructuring plan also seeks to, within eight years, repay all of Dubai World’s creditors.

According to the government of Dubai, $5.7 billion of the aid was from a former $10 billion loan to Dubai World, with the remainder being internally funded. The plan would transfer ownership of Nakheel, formerly a subsidiary of Dubai World, to the direct control of the Dubai government.

Response to the deal was largely positive, with one analyst saying the move “boosts sentiment because this is a strong commitment.” Christopher Davidson, author of books on Dubai and Abu Dhabi, said that while the new funding would “keep the wolves outside the gates a little longer,” the government could not be the sole funder of Dubai World and Nakheel.

1) Murderous Online Games – How to Protect Our Youth?

The society in which we are residing suicide is supposed to be an evil factor which is not supported by any religion and it is treated as illegal act in our law. Then what motivates these teenagers to get involved in such dangerous acts. In my opinion today’s lifestyle which has made our behavior quite mechanical. Modern family has transformed from joint to nuclear which has created a gap in relationships. People are busy enough in their household responsibilities ignoring basic relations. Maximum suffering is faced by teenagers as they are in transition age they need time and advice of their elders which is ignored in the family due to many practical reasons. Such circumstances are leading to a feeling of loneliness which makes teenagers to get diverted towards online friends, games and other activities. This world of internet is full of positive and negative aspects. A child of age group between 12 to16 is too small to handle this world of fascination accordingly he is trapped by some persons with negative intentions. Blue whale game is one of them.

2) Bullet trains in India: pros and cons:

While the country seemed excited when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a diamond quadrilateral of bullet trains to connect the four major cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai in his venture called Smart cities project, critics have a lot to say. There are reasons to be happy about this project and there are reasons that drive us to ponder if this is the first priority of a nation with majority of its population below poverty line. Let us look at it from all point of views and generate our own opinion on this.

3)Hard work or Smart work – Which is important?

If you only work harder you get a high-quality end product, better intellect of achievement, and appreciably more assurance in what you have done, and you receive much more respect for the work put forth.

Smart work and hard work both walks together. Smartness needs experience and experience comes with hard work. For example In any exam be it aptitude or other subjective exam person do lot of hard work to clear all its concepts and then only he can apply shortcuts to solve those problems in shorter time. I have paid attention anywhere that you must know how to do hard work but in a smarter way to endure in today’s world.

4)Demonetization, Merits and Demerits of cashless economy:

The government of India recently took a bold step to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency, which means that the legal tender of currency units is declared invalid from the specified date.

Demonetization of currency means discontinuity of the said currency from circulation and replacing it with a new currency. Most of the people hailed the Modi’s strong decision, while poor were shocked by the move. The overnight decision changed the life of many as black money holders were worried about the pile of cash they were sitting on. Many poor daily wage workers were left with no job and income as owners were unable to pay their daily wage.

5)Smart phones Start Up India,

India is now the second-largest smartphone market in the world after China. The Mark 1 is launching at a tough time for Indian smartphone makers, however, as they battle competition from foreign companies. For example, Micromax was the top smartphone brand in India last year, but that position has been supplanted by Samsung. Xiaomi and Lenovo are also aggressively wooing Indian consumers”even though both companies are based in China, they each opened a smartphone manufacturing plant in India last year.

Everyone else boosts the same hardware, cameras, and processors. There’s no point in doing that anymore, Srinivas says. That’s why we believe our philosophy is very, very valid, because at the end of the day, the user is not going to see the hardware. They will see the software and the more the user can get from the software month after month, the more attached they will be.

Stand Up India –

Prospering Entrepreneurial Culture, There are different motives why the young generation more willing to go and start their own company rather than being a part of MNCs.Youth is more risking taking and ready to take up even the most challenging task. Equipped with self confidence, knowledge, capability to work in teams and other skills which are pretty much required to succeed in the corporate world.

They are very much hard working and have a go getters attitude. They want to put in a lot of efforts and in return expect an equivalent returns. The MNCs demand dedication but they are not able to reciprocate it with their rewards causing a feeling of frustration.Start Ups give the freedom to the person to way in which he always wanted to work. Setting their own rules and the chance to realize the dreams. It requires a huge effort to make a Start Up successful but the youth is ready to face the challenge and deliver despite the hindrances that he may face. They want to solve the problems of the world, they want to contribute in the nation building and money is seldom their end motive. They want to generate values by their hard work and work passionately to achieve their task.

6)Do we really need Smart Cities?

The rate of migration from rural to urban areas is increasing across the world day by day. By 2050, around 70% of the people will be living in cities and India is no exception in this regard.
