New Zealand suicide rate decreases

Tuesday, August 1, 2006

A new report released by the New Zealand Ministry of Health titled “Suicide Trends” shows that the suicide rate in New Zealand has decreased 15% since its peak in the late 1990’s, but the attempted suicide rate is increasing.

There were 12 deaths per 100,000 people between 1983-’85. 16.7 deaths per 100,000 people between 1996-’98. And 14.2 deaths per 100,000 people between 2001-’03. But there were 73.1 attempted suicides per 100,000 people between 1995-’97 compared to 82.5 in 2002-’04.

Jim Anderton, Associate Health Minister, said “It provides some comfort to see the long-term trend still appears to be heading in the right direction, with a continued decline or levelling off of self-inflicted deaths but there is no room for complacency.”

The suicide report also shows that:

 • The 25- to 34-year-old age group has the highest suicide rate
 • Between 2000-’03 Maori has the highest suicide rate
 • Men were less likely than woman to go to hospital for attempted suicide because more men died from suicide.

The New Zealand Government has put NZ$10.3 million towards direct suicide prevention. New Zealand News agencies are banned by law from reporting suicide deaths.

Saudi Arabia fears Hajj swine flu outbreak as four pilgrims die

Sunday, November 22, 2009

As the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca gets underway, Saudi Arabian authorities have expressed concern swine flu could impact pilgrims. Four, with underlying health issues, have already died.

Two men and a woman in their seventies and a seventeen-year-old girl have died, according to the Health Ministry. The men from India and Sudan, the older woman from Morocco, and the teen from Nigeria. None were vaccinated against the virus.

One died in Mecca, the others in Medina. All had conditions including cancer and respiratory ailments. The World Health Organisation puts the current swine flu death toll at 6,750. Four more people are in Saudi hospitals in critical condition and a further twelve are recovering in hospital.

Each year around three million make the pilgrimage. And, Saudi authorities are concerned about the possible spread of the virus. At least one pilgrimage to Mecca is deemed mandatory for every Muslim capable of doing so. Fifteen thousand extra medical staff are deployed, ports and airports screen incomers with thermal cameras, and hundreds of extra hospital beds have been set aside. Visa requirements specify only those vaccinated against the flu strain can apply.

In September, Egypt forbade hundreds of Muslims from leaving Cairo for the Hajj after an Egyptian woman returning from a more minor pilgrimage last July became the first swine flu fatality in both Africa and the Middle East. For Ramadan, pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia was banned by Iran for the same reason.

Anonymous muscle in on Canadian teen rape case

Friday, April 12, 2013

On Wednesday, the Internet hacking collective Anonymous vowed to publish the names of the four suspects involved in the alleged rape of Canadian Rehtaeh Parsons, who committed suicide last week.

A message sent to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) by the hacktivist group called “for immediate legal action” in the case, citing that “If we [Anonymous] were able to locate these boys within 2 hours, it will not be long before someone else finds them.”

This latest operation by the group, dubbed “Operation Justice For Rehtaeh”, led to expression of concern among the members of the RCMP. In an interview with the National Post, Nova Scotia Justice Minister Ross Landry spoke of the dangers of releasing this crucial information in this ongoing investigation, “We don’t want another child taking their life because some vigilante group think it’s OK … maybe it’s a wrong name — then what would they do to someone?”

The 17-year-old Parsons was taken off life support on Sunday following an attempt to take her own life days before. Her mother erected a Facebook page celebrating the life of her daughter as well as acknowledging the true reasons for her daughters tragic passing, “Rehtaeh is gone today because of the four boys that thought that raping a 15-year-old girl was okay, and to distribute a photo to ruin her spirit and reputation would be fun.”

Easy Salmon Recipes}

Easy Salmon Recipes

by

Andrea WynI was never much of a fish lover and to be honest, if it wasn’t for my fiancée I would never be eating salmon. But what I learned from him are some easy salmon recipes that are delicious and take no time to make. In addition, one of them is a gluten free dinner recipe.

The first of the two easy salmon recipes uses honey or maple syrup and cinnamon. You can either bake this salmon in the oven (or toaster oven if you are single) or grill it on the BBQ.

First, select your salmon. I prefer to use the North Atlantic salmon because it has no bones and the tail is a nice fillet. For per person portion size, estimate 8 ounces for the salmon. Then quite simply, spread some honey or maple syrup on top and then sprinkle ground cinnamon.

Bake the salmon in the oven on high heat for about 10 to 12 minutes or until finished, just check to see if the middle is cooked through. You can also soak a piece of cedar wood and bake or grill the salmon on top of the cedar plank as well to give the salmon an added flavor. The preparation for this salmon recipe is a simple and fast gluten free dinner recipe.

The second salmon recipe is even easier! Just take your salmon portion and spread Jade Sichuan peanut sauce. To find a local market to purchase this sauce, just go on the internet and look up jade sauce. Again, bake the salmon in the oven on high heat for about 10 to 12 minutes or until finished, just check to see if the middle is cooked through. Note, because this sauce contains soy, I am not positive that it would qualify as a gluten free dinner recipe. You should check with your doctor or nutritionist or call the manufacturer if you can’t tell by the ingredients on the bottle.

Now for the presentation and finished plate for these easy salmon recipes. There are a couple of different routes you can go. Want to make it an orange Halloween plate? Then serve your salmon recipe dinner with mashed yams and honeyed carrots. Just bake the yams in the oven for about an hour, then scoop out the centers and place them in a bowl. Mash the yams into a purée and add some butter or margarine if desired. The yams are already sweet and personally speaking, don’t need anything else.

Another healthy alternative is to serve these easy salmon recipes with rice and steam veggies. To add some flair to your presentation, take your cooked rice and place it in a Mary Jane measuring cup. About a half cup or quarter cup will work. Place the rice tightly in the cup, then flip the cup over onto the plate to add a bit of flair to your dinner plate.

I hope you have a chance to make if not one then both of these easy salmon recipes and enjoy them for a quick yet nutritious dinner. The salmon recipe that is also a gluten free dinner recipe is one that will convert even the “I swear I will never eat salmon eater.” Trust me, it converted me! Until next time, remember to make it simple, stylish, fun and economical to all!

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Nigerian gunmen have released three-year-old Margaret Hill, after holding her captive for four days. The toddler has since been reunited with her parents. She is reportedly in good health but covered with mosquito bites and also hungry, having not eaten recently.

The kidnappers had threatened to kill the toddler unless a ransom was paid or Mr. Hill came to take her place. The family claims no ransom was paid for her freedom. She was kidnapped from her car on July 5, on her way to school. Her driver was stabbed trying to protect Margaret.

Professional Or Homemade Natural Skin Care Remedies?

Submitted by: Valerie Rosenbaum

Many companies provide natural skin care remedies and you can make some of your own. Here are the pros and cons of doing it yourself.

Water is one of the major components of cleansers, creams and other skincare products. Professional manufacturers used distilled or purified water for mixing.

You could buy distilled or purified water to use for mixing, but you would spend a lot of money. There is also the issue of bacteria growth. Once a jug of distilled or purified water is opened, it is no longer pure. Bacteria will be present, as well as other contaminants.

If you use the tap water present in your home and you are serviced by a public treatment facility, then you will be adding chemicals to the safe and natural compounds that you worked so hard to collect.

You could install a home purifier on your tap to reduce the number of chemicals and other contaminants present in your water. But, you would still have to mix your skincare products on a daily basis.

Without preservatives, bacteria would start to grow in any pre-mixed solutions. Using natural skin care remedies containing bacteria is counterproductive. They would be detrimental to your skin s health and appearance.

Mixing up your skincare products every day would be time consuming. As busy as most people are, they simply don t have time for that sort of thing.

Most cosmetic companies use artificial preservatives to help protect you from bacteria and the skin infections they can cause. The better companies preserve their products with naturally occurring vitamin E.

You might be able to add a crushed up vitamin E tablet to the natural skin care remedies you prepare at home. But, that s risky. There is also the problem of finding a tablet containing natural vitamin E. Most of the vitamin E on the market is manufactured synthetically using petrochemicals.

There are other reasons that making your own products is ill-advised. The preservative issue is just one of the most important in terms of your skin s health. At the least, you will experience more blemishes and breakouts. At the worst, you could develop a nasty staph infection. Staph infections have become more difficult to treat as they have become more resistant to antibiotics.

My suggestion is to leave it to a company you can trust. Let them prepare your natural skin care remedies. Not only is it the safest solution. It is also the most effective.

There are naturally occurring compounds to smooth, soften, moisturize and de-age your skin. Certain types of antioxidants have been shown to reverse sun damage and wrinkles. Active protein complexes have been shown to stimulate the growth of cells and collagen fibers.

For specific problems, such as psoriasis, eczema and acne, there are specific naturally occurring solutions. Shea butter works well because of its natural anti-inflammatory activity. Manuka honey helps to prevent acne and heal existing blemishes, because of its antibacterial activity.

Not all commercial natural skin care remedies are safe and effective. But, if you do a little shopping around, you can find the ones that are.
