What You Need For Your Craft Booth

By Shawn Vincent

If you’re just getting started with selling your crafts at craft shows you may be wondering what you should expect to bring for your booth. Are there things that the show host will provide for you? How can you know?

The way you know is by looking at the show guide lines. Each show should have a published flier or pamphlet telling you exactly what to expect. They will cover subjects like the following:

* Booth Size – They will tell you exactly what size the standard booth will be. Some shows offer varying size booths, but many will indicate a standard size. They will expect and warn you to stay within the confines of your booth. You will have to keep aisle ways clear and free from obstructions.

* Electricity – They will indicate if there is the availability of electricity. If they do provide electricity they will often indicate how many watts will be available to you. This will be important if you will be needing lights or running any machines that require electricity. If you need additional power, in some cases you may be able to run a small quiet generator.

* Fire Marshal Requirements – The shows paperwork will also tell you of any special requirements the fire marshal will have. This can be such things as using flame retardant materials in your booth, certain size and type of extension cords for power, etc.

You may also have to obtain special permits in some cases. For example, if you want to run a barbecue, burn candles, run a heater, or run any electrical, mechanical or chemical device the fire department deems hazardous.

These are just a few examples. Just make sure if you have anything in your booth that could be seen as hazardous by the fire department or show officials that you verify the need of any permits. The last thing you need is to find out after a ticket that you needed a permit.

* Acceptable Signage – In some shows you will even run in to requirements with regards to the signs that you use. Some shows don’t allow any handwritten signs unless they are done in the style of calligraphy. Sometimes a show will put restrictions on the material a sign is made out of. I was reading one set of requirements that stated no vinyl signs.

* Side walls – You could also be required to provide side walls in your booth. This helps to present each booth as its own store front. It helps to provide a nice separation between you and the booths next door. When potential customers are looking at your booth they see your crafts, not your neighbors.

In some cases the back wall of a booth will be a curtain so you wouldn’t have to cover that area. This is likely for an indoor show.

These are just a few of the items that you’ll find covered in the show guide lines. Just make sure you’re diligent to read all the requirements so you have an enjoyable show. Finding out when you get to the show that you aren’t compliant with some regulation can get you kicked out of the show.

You could end up trading an otherwise profitable day for a big fat goose egg.

Drone smartphone app to help heart attack victims in remote areas announced

Monday, August 26, 2013

German non-profit organization Definetz announced on Friday the development of the ‘Defikopter’: a medical drone, launched by smartphone app, designed to be able to fly defibrillators to heart attack victims in remote areas quicker than an ambulance.

The Defikopter is to be launched by an app that sends out the GPS coordinates of the victim. With the ability to fly at 70km per hour in all weather conditions, the eight-armed octocopter could reach any patient within a ten kilometre radius.

The invention has received cautious praise from German medical services; the drone is still in the development and testing stage. Definetz and collaborating drone builder Height Tech have not issued any information about the release of the smartphone app or about when the drone will be available for medical services to purchase.

“We’ll have to see how much these drones can help,” German emergency services union representative Marco König told The Local. German news site Mittelbayerische reports a price tag of €20,000 (US$26,000) apiece.

One major problem Definetz faces is the law that requires all unmanned flying vehicles in Germany to be supervised. Another is that only members of the public who downloaded the app ‘just in case’ of an emergency, plus emergency workers with the app, could summon a drone.

IMF Offers Special Loan for Tsunami-Hit Countries

Wednesday, January 5, 2005

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Rodrigo Rato offered special relief funds for the countries victim of the tsunami disaster. The money is, however, in the form of a loan. The IMF has been present in the area on various occasions.

The IMF offered a one billion U.S. dollar loan. The money would be given as Emergency Natural Disaster Assistance facility, and would be repaid in full and with interests within 3¼ to 5 years.

The money could help the area tremendously, but since it is a loan as opposed to an outright donation, it may not be as helpful. The loan, some fear, may not lead to economic stability in the long run. Despite the possible long term effects, the governments of the tsunami torn nations may simply have no choice but to accept the offer.

Decorate Your Living Room The Contemporary Way

By Adam Peters

The living room is the most difficult room in the house to decorate, because most families…well..live in it! It has to be all things to all people. In the contemporary style, this effect is easy to achieve.

If you’re like most people, you and your family spend most of your time at home in the living room. That’s where you have the couch and chairs, the television and entertainment center, the bookcases and the ornaments. It’s the living room, therefore, that can be the most difficult room to decorate.

The essential item to remember when doing any kind of decorating is to have each room as livable as possible. If you have a lot of young children you won’t want a lot of breakable bric-a-brac in your living room. No matter how many times you impress upon them not to touch, there’s always a chance that they will touch, and break, your breakables. That’s one reason why the contemporary style of home decorating advocates having only a very few accessories placed around the room.

Another reason for having only a few accessories – from flower vases to statuettes to decorative cups or plates – is simply that the contemporary design style advocates minimalism. An absence of clutter. Not only does this make it easier to keep the room clean – no need to dust all your dust-collecting knick knacks – but it also makes the room look neater.

What is the focal point of the room? For most people, that’s usually the entertainment center – complete with large-screen TV, DVD player, CD player, and storage areas for DVDs and VHS tapes. However, contemporary design doesn’t insist that you have an entertainment center – so if you’re not into television don’t worry about it!

The principle behind decorating a room is to center everything around a focal point – whether that’s the entertainment center, a fireplace, or a lovely sofa. Of course in the living room you may well have a fireplace and an entertainment center, in which case you’d probably choose the entertainment center as the focal point.

Around the entertainment center you’ll have furniture. The traditional couch and two armchairs…and if you entertain a great deal perhaps another chair or two. But if you don’t entertain, don’t bother to get those extra chairs! They just add clutter. So does having three or four decorative pillows for each chair as well as for the couch. Simplicity is the watchword, let each piece of furniture speak for itself, don’t try to hide it or “dress” it.

Windows

Windows come in all shapes and sizes, and depending on how large they are can be that focal point of the room that we were talking about earlier. What is the size of your windows? In which direction do they face? (Do you have the sun streaming into the room in the morning, or in the afternoon?) And what is your view? Do you have a pleasant view across a greensward, or are you looking at someone else’s house across the street? Each of these factors determines whether you’ll decorate – or “dress” your windows for privacy, for light control, or to complete the design of your room. Whatever the purpose, the window “treatments,” as decorators call it, will be simple ane elegant, in the contemporary style.

Walls

It’s a given that light, solid colors are the best for walls – such colors make the room appear larger and brighter, and show off any and all wall hangings – from paintings to posters to masks – to best effect. Beige and white are the easiest colors to work with, and blend in well with the rest of the room.

Lighting

In contemporary interior design, the lighting comes not from a central fixture in the ceiling, but rather from stand alone lamps of elegant metallic design, and a few desk lamps – which can be in bright colors to add a splash to the room.

Balance

Leave yourself plenty of room in which to move around, and don’t overstuff your living room with furniture or decor that you don’t need. With contemporary design, simple is always best!

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

NASA’s Mars rovers exceed all expectations

April 6, 2005

With the approval of an additional 18 months of funding, NASA’s twin Mars rovers, the Spirit and Opportunity, will continue their exploration of “fantastic” landscapes for an additional 14 months.

“The rovers have proven their value with major discoveries about ancient watery environments on Mars that might have harbored life,” said Dr. Ghassem Asrar, deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. “We are extending their mission through September 2006 to take advantage of having such capable resources still healthy and in excellent position to continue their adventures.”

With 11 months of extensions exceeding their successful three-month prime missions, “We now have to make long-term plans for the vehicles because they may be around for quite a while,” said Jim Erickson, rover project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

Scientists are within a few football field’s distance of a region called “Etched Terrain,” with rocks exposed by actual wind erosion rather than craters. There are rocks different from others in any other time in Mars’ history. “This is a journey into the unknown, to something completely new,” said Dr. Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., and principal investigator for the rover’s science instruments.

The rover Opportunity has overtaken Spirit in total distance driven. It has been pushed by rover planners to roll more than three miles—eight times the original goal.

On March 20, a new Martian record of 722 feet in a single 24-hour drive was accomplished by Opportunity. Even Spirit is exceeding expectations although it is in much rougher terrain, climbing a rocky slope toward an area called “Husband Hill.”

The rovers have shown signs of wear and tear. Spirit’s rock abrasion tool grinding teeth might be nearly useless after exposing the interior of five times more rocks than its original design goal of only three rocks.

The Best Multivitamin For Men At Different Ages

By Cynthia Wang

Aging and the exposure of men to stress and high level of physical activities require that multivitamins supplements are used to make up for these demands because it is impossible to acquire all that is needed for bone and muscle growth as well as a healthy and satisfactory sexual life.

For Men Below 40 & Physically Active Male

B vitamins and vitamin C help to fight the increased stress levels associated with an active lifestyle in men. Multivitamins intake should therefore target stress reduction and so apart from vitamins B and C, should contain L-Glutathione, Calcium, and Magnesium known to support adrenal function concerned with stress and fatigue reduction.

The level of physical activities in men demand high oxygen intake and for the body to attain the level of oxygen uptake to meet the demand- malic acid, coenzyme Q10 and ginkgo biloba must be part of any multivitamins formulation for men, which improves energy production and enhances performance, stamina and endurance. Ginkgo Biloba is known to enhance oxygen circulation in the brain through increased blood flow to the organ.

Electrolyte Replacement – potassium, calcium, magnesium and sea salt take part in replacing and balancing the minerals and electrolytes lost through strenuous activity. Example, a lot of salt is lost from sweat alone.

Exercise causes a lot of muscle strains and exhaustion; for proper recovery following exercises, N-acetylcysteine, phosphatidylserine and L-glutamine should constitute multivitamins for physically active men.

For Men Over 40 Years

As men advance in age, they become increasingly exposed to risk of heart diseases owed mainly to their kind of life style. To prevent flabby muscles and other cardiovascular diseases vitamin B6, B12 & folic acid help to maintain heart muscles integrity and reduce blood levels of homocysteine, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular problem as a result of blood clot.

“Potent antioxidants like Vitamin E may help reduce the risk of certain eye diseases, heart disease, and even Alzheimer’s disease,” says Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., a professor of nutrition at Tufts University.

About 400 international units (IU) a day, is require since very little is taken in meals. (A typical multivitamin formulation contains just about 45 IU.) Vitamin C is another very potent multivitamins and is very essential for older men.

L-Glutathione, vitamin A, C and beta carotene, contribute to the support and maintenance of healthy eyesight, including inhibiting the formation of cataracts, a disease of the eye that involves the crystallization of lens of the eye causing opacity in a part or entire body of the lens.

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol control maybe achieved by multivitamins formula containing coenzyme Q10, niacin, choline, inositol, and bioflavonoid.

For Men Over 60 Years

From the age of 60 years, men become prone to prostrate diseases like Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostrate Cancer. Men with the highest boron intakes are 65 percent less likely to develop these conditions than men with lower levels, studies have shown. American men have one of the lowest boron intakes in the world. So it is logical therefore that prostrate pathology may be prevented if Boron intake is increased in Multivitamins. About 3 milligrams (mg) of Boron Citrate a day is capable of serving the purpose. USDA researchers found that at this dosage, memory and concentration are improved.

The recommended calcium intake per day is about 1000mg of Ca per day. We also know that most men don’t get the recommended amount as a cup of milk contains just about 300mg. We hardly hear of men who drink 3 to 4 cups of milk everyday. The target for calcium intake can be achieved if multivitamins contain 500 mg calcium citrate. This taken twice daily can ensure that the average calcium requirement is met — one in the morning, one at night, to maximize absorption. These together with a cup of milk a day, maybe all that is needed for strong bones and teeth in men.

Chromium is a muscle-building supplement but also useful in overweight men and those with a high chance of becoming diabetic. These are people with a first degree relatives (mother, father, brother or sister) who is diabetic or second degree relatives (uncle, ante etc.) that are diabetic.

The product we personally use is called Total Balance by Xtend Life, it contains all of the nutrients that we have mentioned and much more.

Highway bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapses

Thursday, August 2, 2007

The Interstate 35W Mississippi River eight-lane bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has collapsed on both sides of the highway over the Mississippi River during rush hour.

Previous reports indicated at least nine people had died, but Minneapolis police revised this to four during a 7:30 a.m. (local time) press conference. Tim Dolan, the Minneapolis Police Chief later stated that “several [adding to the four] people are confirmed dead at the scene,” but would not elaborate on how many. At least 79 have been injured and at least 8 are still missing, still believed to be in the rubble.

The road was busy with bumper-to-bumper traffic in four lanes when the entire 1907 foot (581 m) steel arch bridge collapsed. At least 50 cars were traveling on the bridge, including a school bus. The Red Cross said that 60 children were aboard a school bus, and that ten of those were admitted to a hospital.

The entire length of the bridge over the river collapsed at 6:05 p.m. CDT (UTC-5). The bridge, built in 1967, cleared the water level by 64 feet; the deck surface and pavement were considerably higher.

Reports say that people may be trapped in the water. Further, “many voids may contain survivors, but we cannot search those voids until it’s safe,” said Jim Clack, Minneapolis Fire Chief, during a press conference.

“One has died from drowning,” said a doctor from the medical center during an 8:00 pm press conference, who also said that so far 22 are in “yellow condition” and at least six are in “critical condition.”

Minneapolis officials have stated during an earlier press conference that “people are being sent downtown and all survivors are off the bridge. We are seeking help from the Red Cross.” and “[…]at least 60 children are receiving trauma care some with severe injures, some with minor injuries.”

Most of the injured have been received by Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis for medical treatment. Area hospitals are requesting all off duty staff and all Minneapolis ambulances to report. Residents are being encouraged to stay away from the area to let emergency crews do their work.

It is not known what caused the collapse, but there was construction being performed on the bridge’s road surface which included the use of jackhammers and the FBI has ruled out terrorism.

“Although it is much too early to make any determination of the cause, we have no reason at this time to believe there is any nexus to terrorism,” said Paul McCabe, an FBI spokesman.

In 2001 a stress inspection was done and Minnesota Department of Transportation stated that the bridge “should not have any problems with fatigue cracking in the foreseeable future.”

Typically an eight-lane bridge, the bridge was reduced to four lanes (two in each direction) during the current construction. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) had just announced overnight lane reductions on the bridge to one lane in each direction for the late evening hours of July 31 and August 1.

Massachusetts lawmakers enact plan for universal health coverage

Friday, April 7, 2006Legislators in the Massachusetts General Court, their name for the state legislature, approved legislation on Tuesday, April 4, that would make it the first state in the United States to require all residents to have health insurance and impose penalties for non-compliance. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Republican who is expected to run for U.S. President in 2008, is expected to sign the bill.

The bill passed the lower house, the Massachusetts House of Representatives by a vote of 155-2, and unanimously by the state senate. The Democratic Party holds supermajorities in both houses of the legislature.

Among the bill’s provisions are these:

 1. Businesses that employ more than 10 people are required to provide health insurance for all staff or face fines of $295 per year per uninsured worker.
 2. Individuals will be required to enroll in a health plan by July 1, 2007, or face tax penalties.
 3. Health insurers will provide partially to fully subsidized coverage for low-income residents.

At least one other state (Hawaii) requires employers to provide employee health insurance, but no other state holds individuals accountable for coverage.

Bombing on train from India to Pakistan kills at least 68

Monday, February 19, 2007

Around midnight on Sunday, a pair of bombs exploded on the Samjhauta Express (Friendship Express), a night train going from Delhi, India to Lahore, Pakistan. At least 68 fatalities have been reported. Two more suitcases with improvised explosive devices have been found on the train. Some 13 passengers were reported injured, some with severe burns. According to the police, the explosions were rather small but intended to cause a fire. Since lower class coaches in India generally have barred windows, people cannot flee easily through the window.

The Indian prime minister’s office condemned the act as an “act of terror” and promised to find the people responsible. The Pakistani government also condemned the attack.

The incident comes just before a planned visit of Pakistan’s foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri to India for peace talks, and two weeks before both countries have scheduled a meeting to exchange information on terrorism. Kasuri said his trip would not be cancelled. Pakistani President Musharraf stated: “We will not allow elements which want to sabotage the ongoing peace process to succeed in their nefarious designs.”

Last July, attacks on trains in Mumbai killed 186. “It’s sabotage. It’s an act of terrorism like the one in Mumbai,” said railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. The attack also comes days before the anniversary of the Godhra train burning on 27 February, 2002.
