From Roofs To Roads Recycling Tear Off Shingles

From Roofs to Roads-Recycling Tear Off Shingles

by

Richa Martin

According to experts, asphalt shingles make up two-thirds of the roofing market for both new homes and roof replacements. Thousands of asphalt shingle roofs are installed everyday on new and existing roofs across the country. Many people throw the old shingles and scraps in trailers, dumpsters-anywhere they can. Many companies have considered shingle recycling as another benefit to using shingles such as cost, ease of installation and versatility. Rising consciousness of green alternatives has given way to the recycled shinglesboom. These recycled shingles or tear offs, are used primarily in Hot-Mix Asphalt. Shingle recycling is also used in cold climates to make mix for cold patches for quick and economical repairs.

Each year up to 10 million tons of shingles are removed from roofs across the country, if you choose a roofing contractor who recycles, just think, you may be helping pave a road with these recycled shingles! If you are a contractor just thing of the positive exposure your company will receive as word spreads that you are contributing to the green cause.

When you consider your contractor, consider a company that uses the old

tear off shingles

and uses a recycling company that will recycle the shingles. If you find out that your contractor is just dumping the tear off shingles in a dumpster encourage the company to consider the green method by suggesting a shingle recycling plant in your area. If you are a contractor, shingle-recycling plants have made it even easier to

recycled shinglesOne caveat pertains to weather conditions. Because pavements specs vary from state to state as does weather conditions, state departments of transportation have been testing the effects of adding recycled shingles from tear offs for pavement performance in varying types of weather. There has to be just the right mix of shingle material for the best quality performance and longevity of a paved road. The average fee a recycler must charge to cover processing fees is at least $30 per ton. Green experts say that the differential between the charge of the recycling facility and the landfill tip fee must be large enough to provide an economic incentive to generators to change their attitude and practice of landfill disposal. For more Information Visit our site: alamorecyclecenters.com/Article Source: ArticleRich.com

US, UK investigators seek 777 engine redesign to stop repeat of London jet crash

Saturday, March 14, 2009

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board in the United States have issued an ‘urgent safety recommendation’ in connection to their role alongside the United Kingdom’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch in investigating loss of power in Rolls-Royce engines on Boeing 777s, with the AAIB following suit. One of them resulted in British Airways Flight 38 crashing short of the runway at London’s Heathrow Airport last year. The NTSB and the AAIB want Rolls-Royce to redesign the engines.

Both events occurred on Boeing 777-200ER airplanes powered by Rolls-Royce RB211 Trent 800 Series engines. On January 17, 2008 British Airways Flight 38 experienced a dual engine rollback (reduction of engine power) on final approach to Heathrow and crashed, leaving one passenger seriously injured, eight passengers and four of the flight crew with minor injuries and the airplane written off.

The second event occurred on November 26, 2008, when a Delta Air Lines Boeing 777 experienced a single engine rollback during cruise flight over Montana, United States while en route from Shanghai to Atlanta. Normal operations resumed after the flight crew followed Boeing’s published procedure to recover engine performance and the airplane landed safely in Atlanta.

Boeing has already developed new procedures after the crash to prevent ice from building up within their 777 fuel systems after it became apparent that icing may have been a factor, and it was some of these that the Delta flight crew had followed. Boeing modified these further after the Delta incident. As part of the recent releases by the NTSB and AAIB it has become apparent that investigators from both bodies, which are collaborating, have found ice buildup in the fuel system caused both rollbacks.

In both cases a build-up of ice (from water normally present in all jet fuel) developed on a component called the fuel/oil heat exchanger. This restricted the flow of fuel to the engine, resulting in the uncommanded engine rollback. Investigators initially struggled to produce enough ice under test conditions but have now found that at high concentration, fuel can form ice at very low temperatures in enough quantity to seriously restrict fuel flow, according to a new interim report by the AAIB. This does not occur when fuel demand is lower, as the hot oil then becomes sufficient to entirely melt the ice. The British jet experienced very low temperatures over Siberia.

The vigorous tests are thought to be the first of their kind. They have also confirmed that while ice may have formed elsewhere in the airliner’s fuel system fuel was probably not restricted at any other location. Instead, it is thought ‘soft’ ice formed in the pipes and then broke off, travelling to the fuel/oil heat exchanger and restricting it.

The NTSB has now revealed that they have advised Rolls-Royce to redesign the fuel/oil heat exchanger, and Rolls-Royce have stated that they are indeed working on a replacement part that will be available within twelve months. The AAIB advised Boeing and Rolls-Royce to jointly review the problem across the fuel system, and both companies responded that they ‘accepted’ this recommendation and repeated that a replacement part was being developed.

Both the NTSB and the AAIB also sent letters to the US Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency requesting the installment of the modified component be mandatory. The NTSB suggested this should be either the next maintenance check or within six months. There are 220 Boeing 777-200s – the only type using the affected engine – with Trent 800 series engines.

The fuel/oil heat exchanger is a dual purpose part designed to simultaneously melt fuel ice and cool down engine oil.

The AAIB further noted that it is unclear weather other aircraft designs are at risk, and advised the FAA and EASA to look into increased use of de-icing additives and investigate both the accumulation and sudden movement of ice in aircraft fuel systems and the actual formation of ice in the fuel itself.

Cambridge Planning Board approves new science building at Harvard

Monday, February 28, 2005

Cambridge, Massachusetts —The planning board of Cambridge, Massachusetts voted in unanimous approval of Harvard University‘s plan to build a 410,000 ft² (38 090 m²) science center at 24 Oxford Street, according to the local newspapers, the Harvard Crimson and the Cambridge Chronicle. More than half of the space in the building will be constructed underground.

The Northwest Science Building, as it will be called, will house the laboratories of roughly 30 Harvard science faculty members, as well as a chilled water plant and an electrical substation. The building was designed by Craig Hartman, an architect in the San Francisco office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, who also completed Harvard University Master Plan in 2002, according to the firm’s website. Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill also designed such notable buildings as Chicago‘s Sears Tower and the recently completed international terminal at the San Francisco airport.

The vote to approve the plan occurred at the February 15, 2005, meeting of the Cambridge Planning Board at the City Hall Annex, 344 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. In what the Harvard Crimson called a “departure from the norm,” there were no comments from residents at the hearing. The Crimson reported that the Harvard officials at the meeting took this as “a signal that the community was well-informed about the project prior to the presentation.” The sign advertising the hearing can be seen at right.

In related news, the Director of Urban Design for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill’s New York office, Vishaan Chakrabarti, will be speaking at the Harvard Graduate School of Design on March 1, 2005.

Tips For Real Estate Agents: How To Ensure Success

By Ryan Pauline

There are now millions of real estate agents that are working across the property industry. In the United States alone, it is estimated that there are now up to two million property agents. Needless to say, competition among such professionals is much more intense. All of them are logically intending to close property deals with as many buyers and sellers.

Becoming a successful real estate agent could be a real challenge. It would take more than training, experience, and license to succeed in this industry. To be successful, any agent should be very familiar about the effective regulations and property laws within the market. Not all agents could succeed based on such factors.

According to US-based National Association of Realtors, about 40% to 80% of new property agents drop out from the profession within their first year. Nine out of 10 of them tend to give up after about three years of failure in the industry. Here are several tips that could help real estate agents succeed in their profession.

First, the agent should treat himself as a business. The profession is actually a business. He could be working under a broker. But in general, he remains independent and his income depends on his commissions from sales. Property agents should run the practice as real businesses.

Second, the agent should set a definite and workable plan, whether for marketing or for strategies. A real estate agent is logically responsible for his own marketing expenses. Thus, he should develop a marketing plan within his strategic plan. Marketing plan is driven by information while strategic plan should identify specific action takers and time frame.

Third, there should be effective sales goals. New agents should expect their sale within their first six months in the business. However, that should not affect their sales targets. Such goals could make any professional more determined and driven.

Fourth, set a financial budget. In general budgeting is important given the current volatility of the marketplace. The financial budget of every property agent should cover marketing costs and additional expenses like education, further training, and advertising. Consider the sales targets and the forecast income when setting the budget.

Fifth, prioritize self management. Success comes to agents that could manage their selves better. Time management is essential in balancing personal and professional life. Property agents should set their priorities. They should always find time to spend with their family, health, and social life to attain professional boost.

Lastly, a property agent should find a good and reliable mentor or real estate coach. New agents should take note. A mentor could serve as a guide that would help an agent overcome professional obstacles and challenges. Agents should hire mentors or coaches especially if they have the resources.

Being an incredible sales person is not an assurance that one could be an effective agent. Observing the right attitude and being adequately equipped to operate in the industry would be crucial. These tips could lead real estate agents to real and lasting success.

Grand National winning horse ‘Comply or Die’ dies, aged 17

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

Comply or Die, the racehorse who won the 2008 Grand National has died at the age of 17. His death was announced by his former trainer, David Pipe. He died over at the weekend in Gloucestershire, where he had been staying with jockey Timmy Murphy. He was cremated on Monday and his ashes will return to Murphy.

Murphy was the jockey in the saddle when Comply or Die won the 2008 Grand National. Speaking to the Press Association, he spoke about the horse’s death. He said, “He was part of the furniture at home so it’s very sad. He gave me the greatest day of my career, obviously that can never be taken away. He paraded at Cheltenham and Aintree and was getting ready to do some dressage in the summer. I’m not actually sure how he died, to be honest, but it wasn’t nice to come home to. He was cremated on Monday. He was a happy horse and he was also very clever.”

During his racing career he made £798,809 in prize-money after winning a total of eight races.

The 2008 Grand National victory was his greatest achievement and he almost matched it when he came second place in 2009. He retired in 2011 but remained active, often being paraded at race grounds such as Aintree and Cheltenham. He also participated in some hunting activities. Pipe said, “Since his retirement he had been a lead-horse at Timmy Murphy’s establishment before trying his hand at dressage, a discipline in which he had proven very successful”.

Tributes have been paid to Comply or Die on social media by horse racing fans with several tweeting their appreciation and memories.

Supporters of Myanmar’s Suu Kyi mark detained leader’s 62nd birthday

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

Aung San Suu Kyi, the detained leader of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar marked her 62nd birthday today, still under house arrest, where she has spent most of the past 17 years.

About 250 supporters met at the National League for Democracy (NLD) headquarters in Yangon, not far from Suu Kyi’s home, and held a rally calling for her release. Doves and balloons were released into the air, under the watchful eyes and video cameras of around 50 plainclothes police officers, who were stationed across the street.

The police force was augmented by a dozen truckloads of members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, the political arm of the State Peace and Development, the junta that rules Myanmar.

“The doves symbolise peace. We also released colourful balloons, which rise like her prestige when they fill the sky,” NLD women’s wing leader Lai Lai was quoted as saying by Agence France Presse.

With the party marking marking Suu Kyi’s birthday as “Myanmar Women’s Day,” Lei Lei read out a statement at the ceremony, calling Suu Kyi “irreplaceable” and praising her “honesty, bravery and perseverance.”

Security was beefed up around Suu Kyi’s lakeside home on University Avenue, which is usually open to traffic during daytime, but is closed on significant anniversaries such as Suu Kyi’s birthday or the May 30 anniversary of her detention.

NLD supporters said police were also watching their homes.

“Plainclothes police circled around my house on their motorcycles last night until dawn,” Su Su Nway, 34, was quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse. She was arrested on May 15 with 60 others during a prayer rally for Suu Kyi in Yangon, and was released for health reasons on June 7. She said around 52 NLD supporters were still in custody.

Suu Kyi is generally barred from receiving visitors, so she spent the day alone. Except for her maid, a personal physician, a dentist and an eye specialist, the only other person to visit with Suu Kyi in the past year was United Nations Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari, whom she met for one hour last November at a government guest house.

Winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 11 of the past 17 years, continuously since 2003. Her National League for Democracy won a landslide election in 1990, but the military, which has ruled Myanmar since 1962, refused to honor the results. The country is also known as Burma, but the military government renamed it Myanmar in 1989.

Calls for Suu Kyi’s release have been issued by the NLD, various world bodies and other countries, but the pleadings have been met by no response from the generals.

“In our view, until their constitution is ratified, she will not be released,” Sann Aung, a Bangkok-based leader of the Burmese government-in-exile was quoted as saying by Reuters.

“They are worried that she will be a threat to the National Convention and the referendum,” he told Reuters, referring to the planned national referendum on a new constitution that is being written by the generals.

The Nation newspaper in Bangkok marked Suu Kyi’s birthday with an editorial, saying that sanctions against the Myanmar regime have been ineffective.

“The junta has earned huge amounts of foreign revenue from oil and gas exports, with prices jacked up many times over. With rich mineral resources, energy hungry countries have been attracted to Burma despite the repressive nature of the junta,” the editorial said, also making note of a recent deal that Russia has made to build nuclear reactor in Myanmar.

The paper also said Myanmar bodes ill for the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations regional grouping.

“As long as Aung San Suu Kyi remains incarcerated, ASEAN’s reputation and the group’s international standing will be tarnished. Asean leaders have repeatedly appealed to the Burmese junta to free her, but to no avail … today, Burma is the black sheep of ASEAN. Without any current provisions for sanctions, Burma will remain as intransigent in the future as it is today.”

Know About Bariatric Surgery

Know About Bariatric Surgery

by

Oband Centers Expert

Bariatric Surgery is generally a medical procedure performed on individuals who are morbidly or severely obese for the sole purpose of losing the said excess weight. Read on the article to know more about this effective Bariatric Surgery.

In Most instances of weight loss struggle, surgery is usually taken as the last resort. The same applies in the current scenario and one is expected to have tried all other possible means of treatment and failed or faced medical stumbling blocks. There are several methods that can be used to achieve this, they include;

1. Gastric bypass surgery

Reroute part of the small intestines to a small pouch like compartment. This is usually the most common surgery in this field.

2. Sleeve gastrectomy

Remove part or portion of the stomach

3. Gastric banding

Implant medical device to reduce size of stomach.

Independent studies have shown that bariatric surgeries do offer several long term advantages especially in the areas of weight loss and treatment of diabetes to otherwise long suffering patients. It has also been suggested that the above mentioned surgical procedure should be undertaken in high volume centers of specialization where surgeons with a wealth of experience will be easily found. Thus for bariatric surgery Los Angeles is one of the cities where a good center can be found. Most of these mentioned surgeries employ minimally invasive techniques to achieve the required objectives.

After undergoing the surgery, the patient is usually given a strict diet which he/she is expected to adhere to. In most instances one will be restricted to a clear liquid diet. Foods that fall into this category will include; clear broth, highly diluted fresh fruit juices. This feeding continues until the intestinal tract has improved. After this stage and for the next two or three weeks the patient will be put on a different diet that is basically sugar free. The kind of foods encouraged during this period include; mashed potatoes with soup, drinks full of protein, skimmed milk, some margarine etc.

After surgery overeating is made very difficult because the stomach can only take in a certain amount of food. Exceeding the allowed capacity due to reduced stomach size will lead to vomiting. Due to the fact that patients cannot eat a large helping of food they are bound to lose or lack some crucial nutrients in the body, due to this most patients are usually placed under multivitamins for life. Patients are also advised to eat foods high in protein and very low in fats. Alcohol intake is not encouraged though minimal intakes can be handled by the stomach. Bariatric surgery just like any other medical procedure does come with risks. It thus carries the same risk levels like any other risk factor of one to two percent chance of developing life threatening complications.

However, current technological developments have made the procedure safer and easily available. Some of the possible side effects noted from several studies include diarrhoea and feeling of bloating after eating. Leaks at the site of surgery also accounted for some complaints though they were minimal. Present is a small percentage of patients who suffered pneumonia after undergoing the surgery. The mortality rate of patients undergoing this procedure was less than 0.2%.

Bariatric Surgery Los Angeles

, therefore, is a relatively safe procedure.

RU486 debate complicates with amendments posed in Australian House of Representatives

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

The ongoing debate over whether the Australian Health Minister Tony Abbott, or the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulate the abortifacient mifepristone (RU486) has complicated with a number of members proposing amendments to the Senate bill, now in the House of Representatives.

Jackie Kelly (Australian Liberal Party, Lindsay) has said that “There should be a transparent process in which the minister is accountable for his or her decision” on so-called restricted goods (of which RU486 is such a good) as listed in the TGA legislation. Kelly has proposed an amendment with points stating that “the Minister for Health and Ageing continuing to have the decision making role in relation to the approval of restricted goods…”, “the Minister being required to obtain written advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration prior to giving written approval or refusal to approve”, “the Minister’s decision being subject to disallowance”.

In the debate on February 14, Andrew Laming (Liberal, Bowman) noted his intent to propose an amendment in the later consideration in detail stage, noting his views that the TGA process is “so far removed…from the concerns and the beliefs of the community” and that he is “unable to convince [himself] that completely leaving these decisions to the TGA is the right thing to do”. His amendment loosely aims to propose a “disallowable instrument in Parliament where there is a disagreement with the findings of the TGA.”

The introduction of amendments has caused confusion on procedural matters February 15 in the Questions to the Speaker period (that follows Question Time), where members can ask questions of the Speaker on procedural and other technical matters. In the following vote on the proposed legislation, if one of the votes on the amendments succeeds, this has the effect of discontinuing the other amendment proposals, as each of the amendments proposed has the effect of being a complete alternative bill.

The RU486 debate will have precedence over all other matters in the House until it is dealt with. Voting is expected on Thursday.
